The Commissioners are made up of a group of comedians from across the greater Austin Area. They play a series of Blues, Rock and Punk from the 60s, 70s and early 80s.

I came across The Commissioners through Howard Beecher. He has been a friend of my dad since they were kids. Now, Howard has his own children.

It’s always a good time when Howard is around. He brings the laughs, then tells you something really important and then makes you laugh again.

Go catch these guys at The Velvetta Room sometime! Buy these kids a drink! You will be in for a treat!

I had about 45 minutes to blow before the band I wanted to see. I looked at my schedule and thought, I could leave now and see XXX band around the corner or I could stand here and have a great place for YYY band who is on after this guy.

This guy turned out to be Rich Aucoin.

From the moment he said go, I was enthralled. He had everyone in the crowd waiting for his next command. When he said ‘sing’, you sang. When he said ‘dance’, you danced. When he said hug your neighbor, you hugged.

Rich has a way of making people smile. He has a gift with stringing strangers into new found friends.

Rich is amazing. And that is all I really can say about that.

During SXSW, I had some friends ask me if we could have a show at my house. Over the proceeding weeks, the party got moved from my front yard to my living room. At first, I was uneasy with this idea. I live in a home built in 1910ish and stands on pier-and-beam. If you took a marble and laid it on the floor in the kitchen, the marble would roll into the living room with ease. I suspect the house tilts by about -10 degrees south.

Once Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt started their set in my living room, it blew my mind. They packed nearly 75 people into into a small pace. We danced. We laughed. We tasted each others sweat.

It will be a moment I will never forget.

With that, I wanted to capture that same feeling at Red 7. Hopefully, you see the joy in the swirls.

If you know me, then you know that I am willing to travel nearly 900 miles to see Derek on occassion. This time, I took the short ride to Dallas.

Derek played his newest record, CTRL, in completion. If you haven’t had the chance to hear it, please do.  It is a wonderful record.

Ben and I have been friends for a few years now. Hanging out with him is always a good time! He loves the Mavs and when possible we get together to cheer on our team.

Ben and I had been talking about doing a photo shoot for a couple of weeks. He had just ordered new oars and thought a lifestyle shoot would be fun.

Earlier this week, he found out that his son would be in town and wanted to get him in on the shoot as well.

The weather in Austin had been rainy and dark for a few days. At about 4PM on Sunday he shot me a text that said, “Hey man, rain is gone from the forecast.” We decided to meet in an hour at the Austin Rowing Club. By the time, I got out of my car at Town Lake, the sun was gone. We decided to make the best of it and go on with the shoot.

Working with kids, you have to be fast, ready and extremely patient. Jamin would hold a smile for 2 to 3 seconds at a time before he would morph into silliness. Sometimes, you just need to go with the flow and take sillyness by the horns. In the end. His demeanor made the event light.

The clouds began to change fairly quick. Initially, I was disappointed. I wanted a bright sunny day for Ben and his son, as they share a beautiful bond.

Nevertheless, I think the clouds show the strength that Ben and Jamin have and allowed the pictures to focus on them rather then the screen around them.

As for the solo shots … the darkened sky pushes Ben forward in each photo and shows him as a forced to be reckoned with.

This may by one of my favorite shoots at this point in time.
